Connections — Herbert Hawkins's Legacy on Indiana Avenue

Presented in partnership with the Encyclopedia of Indianapolis and Indianapolis Public Library, this presentation uses Herbert Grigsby Hawkins’s recovered story to explore Indiana Avenue and the broader forces that shaped Black Indianapolis, including segregation, redlining, transportation inequities, redevelopment, and displacement. Together, personal history and historical context reveal the connections between memory, place, community, and the stories we preserve.
