FEATURED PUBLIC HISTORY PROJECT
Recovering the Story of Herbert Grigsby Hawkins
A family discovery became a journey to restore an overlooked Indianapolis life to the public record.
Herbert Grigsby Hawkins was a businessman, laborer, civic and community leader whose life intersected with Indianapolis’s historic Indiana Avenue during an important period in the city’s Black history.
For decades, much of his story had disappeared from the public record. Dr. Michelle D. Dartis, Hawkins’s granddaughter, began reconstructing his life through archival research, historical newspapers, photographs, public records, family materials, and other surviving sources.

What emerged was far more than a family history. The research revealed a man whose life offered a window into Black entrepreneurship, organized labor, civic participation, community life, and the networks that helped shape Indianapolis during the mid-20th century.
The project became an example of what can happen when overlooked histories are deliberately recovered, documented, and returned to public view.
